Please contact the Program Coordinator ASAP if your flight has been delayed, or if there are any other last-minute changes to your itinerary. Please do not use email to communicate while traveling as it is not consistently monitored, utilize WhatsApp to reach coordinators on site at your destination.
Upon arrival at the San Jose International Airport (SJO), you should collect your baggage, proceed through Customs. Immigration & Border Control will ask where you’ll be based during your session- the address is Calle Juntas, Alajuela Province, Turrúcares District, Costa Rica. Don’t forget your return or onward ticket and evidence of sufficient funds. Make sure your passport is stamped on arrival and keep the departure form if you’re given one (if you lose your departure form, you may need to contact immigration officials before you leave the country to make alternative arrangements). The rescue center has hired a well known and respected taxi service for your transport. As you are exiting the airport, there will be a driver with a sign with your name. Checked baggage is occasionally delayed, so please pack clothes and toiletries for 1-2 days in your carry on, as well as any valuables. We also recommend locking, zip-tying, or plastic wrapping your checked bags.

Travel tips: This list can be adapted to suit your session length and the season- in Costa Rica, the dry season lasts from Dec-April, the rainy season lasts from May-Nov, the hottest months are Feb-April and the coolest months are Sept-Nov; we recommend checking retrospective weather forecasts from the previous year for a rough idea of what to expect. Consider interchangeability- if everything you pack can be worn more than one way, you can pack much less. Also, dark clothes show less dirt and quick-drying clothes can be washed more often. As a general rule of traveling, only pack as much as you can carry![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Currency Exchange” tab_id=”1724446899514-0688c4f5-f0ef”][vc_column_text]We recommend bringing at least $50 USD in small bills- US dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica, as are Visa and Mastercard. Tours arranged on site can run from $35 to $125 in transfer and entry fees depending on where you want to go. Cash is needed to book these tours on site. If you do not want to travel with that much cash, ATMs are regularly accessible and many offer both USD and CRC (Costa Rican currency). Call your bank to find out about international ATM withdrawal, debit card, and credit card fees- most banks have a withdrawal fee plus a conversion fee for ATM withdrawals but only a conversion fee for debit or credit card purchases. Some “travel rewards” credit cards offer no international fees. If you decide to use a credit card for most purchases, you should also have access to an ATM card (this is cheaper and easier than exchanging money and safer than traveling with a lot of cash).
